Smoke detector mandatory 2022
From 1 July 2022 it will be mandatory to install smoke detectors in every home in the Netherlands. This obligation has existed for some time for new-build houses, but the regulations will also apply to existing buildings. In the event of a fire, most victims are caused by smoke inhalation. The purpose of introducing this new rule is to save lives.

Smoke detectors will soon also be mandatory for existing buildings
For new buildings, a smoke detector must be installed on every floor where people live. Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) Raymond Knops wants this obligation to also apply to existing buildings. The proposal to record this in building regulations has since gone into internet consultation. In doing so, the minister is implementing the advice of the fire service, municipalities, property owners and building parties to make smoke detectors mandatory for all homes.
Minister Knops: “Most fire victims are caused by smoke inhalation. Smoke detectors therefore save human lives. Last year's TNO research showed that smoke detectors in all homes reduce the risk of fatalities. That is why I want to amend the Building Decree on this point and make smoke detectors mandatory not only for new buildings, but also for existing buildings.”
